In the earliest days of the profession, plastic surgery was the sole domain of an aging wealthy female population. With the Baby Boomer generation and continual progress in cosmetic surgery, the appeal broadened. Now that plastic surgery is widely accepted by women and men of every age, the young 18 – 34 year old Millennial generation is embracing cosmetic surgery with open arms.

According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS http://www.surgery.org/), there are five procedures most favored by this group. They are listed in descending order of popularity.

Not surprisingly, breast augmentation is the most popular surgical procedure for the Millenial population. This procedure meets so many needs, such as making breasts more symmetrical, enlarging them to a desired size, restoring to the original size and shape after pregnancy, weight loss or breastfeeding and restoring breasts after breast cancer or other surgeries. This is why breast augmentation is always one of the top two procedures in all population groups. However in 2015, there were 146,430 breast augmentation procedures performed on Millennials.

Currently, Liposuction is the one surgical procedure that is number one in all age groups, however it comes in number two for Millennials. In this population group, liposuction was performed 110,669 times.

Nose Surgery, breast reduction surgery and ear surgery come in at numbers 3, 4 and 5 respectively. These three surgeries are often sought after for health reasons however the aesthetic value is always a plus. Rhinoplasty or nose surgery is the one exception. While it is often done to correct impaired breathing, it is most often done for cosmetic reasons.

Millennials had 67,563 nose surgeries in 2015, 28,281 breast reduction surgeries (this only includes women, there could be more if men were included in the population.) and, finally, there were 13,882 ear surgeries in this group performed to correct the size, shape or position of the ear.

Whatever demographic you are in, when considering plastic surgery always do your research and only work with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon experienced in the procedure you are considering. You’ll be paving the way for greater success and happiness in future generations as the popularity of cosmetic surgery becomes even greater.
