What is Liposuction?

Liposuction will change the contours of your body, such as under the chin, the upper arms and armpits, male chest/breasts, trunk, the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, inner knees, calves, and ankles. Liposuction will permanently improve the contour and proportion of the treated areas. The goal is to create a more flattering figure or shape, in or out of clothing.

  • Are looking to lose fat rather than achieve weight loss
  • Are within around 20% of their ideal body weight
  • Have good skin elasticity

Our Approach to Liposuction

Here at Maine Plastic Surgery, this procedure is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with IV sedation. Small suction tubes called cannulas are inserted through tiny incisions placed in inconspicuous locations near the fat deposits, and excess fat is then removed.

Financial and Risk Consideration for Liposuction

This procedure is considered cosmetic and is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment. However, we do offer access to a variety of healthcare lenders for your convenience. Our friendly patient care coordinator will help you to apply. In many cases, these lenders provide instant approval so you can get started immediately. They also provide reasonable down payments, APR’s and repayment terms that most clients find manageable. The specific risks can be determined only at the time of consultation.

All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally; major complications are rare.

All cosmetic treatments are performed at our Maine Plastic Surgery accredited outpatient center in Portland, Maine. Our medical facility is equipped with the very latest in advanced technology and equipment, and boasts a caring, knowledgeable support staff that goes the extra mile to ensure your success.

Following this surgery, patients go home in a first-stage compression garment or tape covering the treated areas. After pain and soreness decrease, a second-stage garment is worn for an additional three to four weeks. Total compression time is approximately one month to help reduce swelling. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Bruising and swelling usually subside in two to four weeks. The final result takes shape over two to three months; however, final contours may not be evident for as long as six months.
